May 2020 Chapter Meeting

Managing Research Projects & Programs by Jim Walke, MFA, PMP

What do Google, rocket fuel, Gatorade, artificial insemination, MRIs and ultrasounds, television and breathalyzers have in common? Along with a significant percentage of all innovations in technology and healthcare, these have roots in fundamental research performed at a university. U.S. institutions currently spend $75 billion per year on fundamental and applied research, providing the building blocks for another $400 billion per year in government and industry developmental R&D. How can project management be a part of this process, especially at the beginning when the goals are by definition uncertain? How do you make a work breakdown structure for pure knowledge? What are the challenges of working in this sector and managing the business side of science?

Jim Walke is a Senior Project Manager at the Biocomplexity Institute & Initiative at the University of Virginia.  He is currently PM for a project under the DARPA SocialSim program, modeling the spread and evolution of information online. Formerly, he was PM for an IARPA FunGCAT project with the goal of preventing the accidental or intentional creation of biothreats through DNA manipulation, and also for a six year NIH project under their Bioterror Defense program. Simultaneously, Jim has applied the principles of project management to grant writing, leading successful efforts with scientific teams to secure funding from NIH, NSF, DoD, and other agencies.  He works remotely from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
