May 2020 Chapter Meeting

Technical
What do Google, rocket fuel, Gatorade, artificial insemination, MRIs and ultrasounds, television and breathalyzers have in common? Along with a significant percentage of all innovations in technology and healthcare, these have roots in fundamental research performed at a university.

U.S. institutions currently spend $75 billion per year on fundamental and applied research, providing the building blocks for another $400 billion per year in government and industry developmental R&D. How can project management be a part of this process, especially at the beginning when the goals are by definition uncertain? How do you make a work breakdown structure for pure knowledge? What are the challenges of working in this sector and managing the business side of science?
