President's Message Fall 2018

Dear Member,

It is my privilege and honor to serve as the president of PMI-Huron Valley Chapter for 2018-2019. We are fortunate, as PMI-HVC is well poised for success, thanks to last year’s president, Craig Karagitz, Ed Pelic, past president, and Board of Directors. I thank them for their dedication to PMI-HVC, and for providing a good foundation from which the new board can work.

I am pleased and excited to share that we have an outstanding group of professionals serving as your 2018-2019 Board of Directors. This group of passionate leaders bring a wide-range of experiences and help to uniquely position us to achieve greater success!

To share our 2018-2019 roadmap and framework for success, PMI-HVC is committed to the following key focus areas:

  1. Understand Member Needs. Increase Member Value. Our goal is to drive new ideas to give you, our members, concrete reasons to renew your membership, and more importantly, reasons to recommend PMI-HVC to your friends and colleagues. We also see a lot of potential to help more and more local professionals network and connect with each other, learn and grown, and succeed in their career and personal development.
  2. Enable Corporate, Academia, Community/Social Good Outreach. We will reach out and establish communication channels with area companies, universities and colleges, community-based organizations, and professional organizations. This will help us ensure that we are addressing current project management needs, expanding our knowledge base, and giving back within the greater Ann Arbor community.
  3. Volunteer Program. As a 100% volunteer-driven organization, we rely on a dedicated team of volunteers to help PMI-HVC achieve its goals. To this end, we will work to structure a framework of best practices in volunteer management for our chapter. This framework will aid us in recruiting, retaining, and providing the right leadership development opportunities for our volunteers.

We kicked off our new program year on 9/17/2018, with an engaging presentation on “Succeeding in Global Business Communication” by Alan Headbloom, M.A. of Headbloom Cross-Cultural Communication (www.headbloom.com). If you missed it, here’s a simple recap – there are 4 requirements for successful business relationships: 1. Self-awareness. 2. Motivation to understand others. 3. Knowledge about others. 4. Flexibility to change when confronted with difference. Great advice to keep in mind when interacting with others.

We’ve heard you! The results from our Meeting Date/Time Survey held last program year showed a preference to start chapter meetings at 6 pm. Also, the results were equally split between days of the week to meet. Monday and Thursday were the winners.  Starting with our October chapter meeting, our meeting time will start at 6 pm and end by 8 pm and we will meet on Monday, 10/15. Then, in November, we’ll meet on Thursday, 11/15 from 6-8 pm. This is so more of you can attend the chapter meetings, and we look forward to having you!  Be sure to check our website for current event information and to register.  Psst - you don’t want to miss out on the pre-registration discount.

PMI-HVC is holding a 2-day PDD on November 5-6, 2018 at the Polo Fields Golf & Country Club in Ann Arbor. There is a high demand for ScrumMaster Certification today. Scrum and Agile are hot topics in management and project management circles. Flow is Agile at the executive level yet also delivers high performance for teams at the individual level. Organizations that have implemented Flow have increased performance by as much as 400%. The PMI-ACP® due to its more rigorous requirements along with the Agile additions to the PMBOK® Guide - 6th Edition will also be discussed. The PMI-ACP will become the designation of choice for Agile. This 2-day training provides 15 PDUs and will equip participants to take the exams to become certified in all three designations (Flow Certification is immediate without an exam).

The instructor is trainer and Enterprise Agile Coach, Ted Kallman, FCT, PMP, PMI-ACP, CSM, CSP, CSPO. Ted is a National #1 best selling author of FLOW and internationally recognized trainer and speaker on Agile, Project and Program Management. For more information, check out the event (and discounted price) at PMI-HVC.org. You can register at https://flow.tedkallman.com/trainings/pmihvc-discount/.

I would like to acknowledge and personally thank ALL chapter volunteers who have worked hard to get PMI-HVC to the state we are at today. We are actively seeking volunteer partners to join us and help drive our initiatives forward. Please contact us if you are interested in helping. We would love to have you join us!  Expand your network, use your unique talents, develop leadership skills, help to make a difference and, of course, have fun! Plus, what an awesome way to earn PDUs!

I welcome your thoughts and ideas on how we can continue to improve our chapter, and in learning what you find beneficial as a member of the PMI-Michigan Huron Valley Chapter.

On behalf of the PMI-HVC Board of Directors, thank you for your valued membership. We look forward to a productive and successful year!

Best,

Christine Blair
